Owner Camp 011 Vieques Island

April 3-6, 2016
W Retreat & Spa
Vieques Island, Puerto Rico
$3299 for new attendees
$2999 for alumni

Just Look at This Place

We've had Owner Camps in big cities. We've had Owner Camps in remote locales. We've even had an Owner Camp on an island before. But not this island. This island makes all other islands wish they were this island. Just between you and us, Vieques Island is Puerto Rico's best-kept secret. And we'll be commandeering the W Retreat & Spa – Vieques Island, nestled on two private, secluded beaches.

Getting to Vieques

Planning Your Travel

If you're coming from anywhere west of the Mississippi, you'll probably want to arrive on April 2nd and chill for a day (not a bad idea), since you likely won't be able to make it to Vieques in time for the reception at 5PM on the 3rd. It's a bit of a journey. The resort has extended our group rate of $259/night for you if you choose to arrive on April 2nd.

For those of you on the east coast, planning your travel for April 3rd should be totally doable. Just make sure you get the earliest flight out of your home airport that you can.

Book a round-trip ticket to Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport in San Juan (SJU), which is serviced by many major and discount airlines from the U.S. mainland and Canada.

Plan your departure from Vieques for Thursday, April 7th. Or, if you wish to extend your stay through the weekend at our group rate, you can do that too! Be sure to let us know.

from san juan To/From VIEQUES ISLAND

We recommend booking a separate reservation on Cape Air for your inter-island flights. Make sure you're allowing enough time to make the transfer to your Cape Air flight (at least an hour) from your flight into (and out of) SJU. We'd like you to arrive on Vieques Island no later than 3PM on April 3, in time for our opening reception at 5PM.

If you live in a city served by JetBlue, you can book a single ticket all the way to Vieques Island through their codeshare partnership with Cape Air.

Arriving at Vieques: Have a drink and do nothing.

W Airport Lounge at Vieques Airport

W Airport Lounge at Vieques Airport

Be wowed by with a capital W even before you arrive at W Retreat & Spa—Vieques Island at W Airport Lounge, where a warm welcome and cool refreshments await before you're whisked away to paradise. Open from the time of the day's first arrival and departure to the very last flight, this is one welcome that will never wear out. The W staff will care for your luggage as you relax and await transportation to the retreat.

From the airport,  you'll have a few options to the resort, which is a quick 5 minutes away:

  • Hotel Shuttle (complimentary and recommended): Enjoy a warm welcome at the W Airport Lounge and then let the staff tuck you into the resort's hotel jeep to take you to your escape at the W Retreat.
  • Private Car Transfer (complimentary): If you're interested in taking a private car to the resort from the airport instead of the shuttle, please contact Whatever/Whenever® in advance to arrange for luxury transfer services.
  • Taxi: Rates start at $5 USD per person, cash only.
  • Island Car Rental: Reservations are required and availability is limited. Call ahead at 787-741-7099. New Jeep Wranglers, Libertys, and Honda Elements are available.

Our Agenda

W Retreat Great Room—our home base

W Retreat Great Room—our home base

We structure every Owner Camp so that you have the perfect blend of structure and free time. This isn't an un-conference. That term stinks. You're not just hanging out without plan, fending for yourself, hoping to make connections. We devote meaningful amounts of time to discuss issues that are important to you as a digital studio/agency owner, with structure. But we don't get started early in the morning, and we don't like to be stuck in a hotel meeting room for too long either, especially when you're amongst such amazing surroundings.

What is Owner Camp?

Transformational Retreats for Digital Studio Owners

Owner Camp 004, Captiva Island, FL

Owner Camp 004, Captiva Island, FL

Running a digital agency is tough. Like many of us, you probably didn’t study business management in school, and you sure as hell don’t have an MBA. Truth be told, you probably consider yourself a designer, developer, or strategist who is now inexplicably running a business.

How did that happen?

Now, you spend your time in the jungle (often without a machete) closing deals, managing payroll, and struggling with whether or not to grow the thing—all the while searching for the magic bullet that’ll make things a cinch.

Until a couple of years ago, the only opportunity you had to commiserate about the dirty details of running your shop was yelling in someone's ear over the deafening din of a conference happy hour. Wouldn't it be nice just to get away for a few days to recharge your batteries and talk to your peers? Your real peers?

You're not alone. That's why we created Owner Camp.

Discussions are open, honest, and frank, and everyone participates. Everyone! Owner Camp is not about a single person standing in the front of a room, presenting while you scribble notes. Owner Camp is a series of moderated, candid conversations. There are no elephants in the room, because we shoot them dead, together.

One of the things you'll quickly discover at Owner Camp is that no matter how unique you think your experiences are, there are several people who have gone through the exact same situations. Comparing notes about how each of you dealt with these situations is truly eye opening.

No one at Owner Camp is there to tell you what to do or how to do it, but we guarantee you'll walk away with perspectives that will allow you to make more informed decisions.

Our attendees determine the discussion topics at each Owner Camp. We start with a wide range of ideas and whittle them down to the most popular. Discussion topics from previous Owner Camp events include:

  • Business Development
  • Company culture
  • Differentiation
  • Financial metrics
  • Growth
  • Legal/contracts
  • Strategic planning
  • Tools & processes
  • Working with teams

Perhaps the best thing about Owner Camp is that our attendees are from diverse backgrounds and industry niches, offering perspectives well outside of your immediate circle of influence.

During the event, we’ll begin to forge lasting relationships that eventually serve as an ongoing support system. You'll retain access to this dialog long after the event. Owner Camp offers an ongoing forum where you can regular maintain contact and provide advice, trade stories, and share successes well after you part ways.

Each Owner Camp class will be augmented with subject matter experts and consultants who provide business advice you can immediately act upon.

As if that wasn't enough, we’ll truly have a great time together. Laughter is the best medicine, and we’ll all be buzzing from the dose Owner Camp dishes out.
